Moraga-Orinda Fire District Approves Reduction In Staffing Levels

Fire district board also appoints Stephen Healy as the new permanent fire chief

There will soon be fewer fire personnel on duty on a daily basis in the Moraga-Orinda Fire District.

The district's board of directors this week approved a plan to reduce daily staffing from 19 to 17 employees, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

The board approved the proposal after a workshop on Wednesday night in Orinda on the district's budget.

They also appointed Interim Fire Chief Stephen Healy to the district's top post permanently.

They left it up to Healy to decide how to implement the staffing reductions, according to the Times.

It was the second workshop this month. At a session in Moraga in early October, fire officials laid out alternatives to erase the district's $1 million deficit in its $20 million budget.

The hope is the staffing cuts will take care of most of the deficit.
