It's Official: Squirrels Is Closing Next Month

Longtime Lafayette eatery, beloved by many, will go dark in August.

After nearly 30 years, The Squirrel's Coffee Shop at the corner of Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Moraga Rd. is closing its doors. With it goes the breakfast and lunch habits of many residents, and many fond memories.

"With the necessary foundation work, and the cost of gas and electricity rising, it's just a good time to get out," said owner Richard Poy. "I'll miss my customers, and employees."

"It's a great counter diner," said lifelong Lafayette resident Chris Kahn. "It's a classic, no-frills experience. Lafayette's losing a real institution."

The restaurant will officially close in August, Poy said.

But that won't be the end of the Poy family's involvement with the neighborhood. They own the four neighboring buildings, which includes the Pioneer Market, the first store in Lafayette, and most recently the home of Handlebar toy store.

The Poys have approved plans to renovate the buildings and put in new retail stores and restaurants to make the area once again a commercial hub of downtown.

But the future will probably not include a Squirrel's Coffee Shop.
