The Lafayette Arts & Science Foundation is a nonprofit, volunteer and parent-run education foundation providingMore financial help for local schools in the areas of science, math, history, writing, foreign language, technology, art and music. Despite their name, the group's focus extends well beyond just arts and science programs. LASF relies heavily on financial contributions from parents, and actively pursues contributions from those whose children stand to benefit from enhanced academic and arts programs. LASF has been a major force in the success of Lafayette's schools for the last 29 years.</p> <p>Rather than merely raising money and handing it over to the local school district, LASF rates the programs it supports for relevance and performance, and adjusts them accordingly while working in conjunction with the district curriculum. LASF also coordinates and sponsors art and science fairs and supports school music festivals.</p>

Lafayette is at the center of the two cities, Lafayette and Orinda, and one town, Moraga, that form the region knownMore as "Lamorinda." The city was incorporated in 1968, although settlement of the area began in 1848 and the Pony Express made a quick stop here in 1860.</p> <p>Today, Lafayette is favored by long-term residents and new arrivals for its semi-rural charm, quality of life, top-rated schools, low crime rate, mild climate and oak tree-studded hills. Located between Berkeley and Walnut Creek, Lafayette has its own Bay Area Rapid Transit station (BART) and is only a 25-minute BART ride from San Francisco.</p> <p>A "limited services" city with police and fire protection contracted to county agencies, Lafayette's administrative offices are responsible for human resources, finance and office operations. Code enforcement, engineering, parks & recreation, planning, and public works are headquartered at city hall.</p> <p>The Police Services Division provides contract law enforcement services through a contract with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department. Police Chief Mike Hubbard heads a team of 15 sworn officers, five reserve officers, a canine officer and five non-sworn officers.</p> <p>Duties include crime suppression, investigation, traffic enforcement, youth services, vehicle abatement, and community outreach and education.
