Joaquin Moraga Intermediate Mourns the Loss of a Teacher; Tribute Planned

Carol Robak taught at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate for 34 years, passing recently after battling breast cancer. Now, her students and colleagues are looking for a little help in honoring her with a tribute befitting a teacher.

Patch heard from JM teacher Karlene Steelman Tuesday. Karlene and the JM family are looking for a little help in honoring a colleague who lost her battle with breast cancer recently. "One of our former teachers, Carol Robak, passed away a few weeks ago," Steelman said. "We're hoping to paint a mural in her honor on the side of the gym. The design for the mural will be a contest and our art teacher will be painting it." Steelman said the school is estimating the cost of the mural at about $2,500 and they are looking for a little help in defraying the cost. "We were wondering if it might be possible to let people know about the contest and where to send donations if they are interested on Lamorinda Patch?" Steelman asked. The short answer, …

I remember having Mrs. Robak for PE in the late seventies and early eighties at JMIS. She was a greater teacher and a class act. During the Iranian hostage crisis, when a big group of kids were taunting a smaller group of kids whose families had fled the Iranian revolution and settled in Moraga, Mrs. Robak was the only teacher I saw who tackled the problem head-on, sitting all of us down one day …   more ›

Lamorinda Turns Out To Remember "Mr. C" - With Music

Locals gather in harmony to celebrate the life of local music man Joe Campana.

For more than six decades Joe Campana brought harmony to the City of Lafayette by providing the community with a place to rent, purchase and practice their musical instruments.  Today, June 11, the people who knew and loved "Mr. C" came together to celebrate his life with a musical tribute at Petar's in Lafayette.  A wide range of local musical talent, including singer/tambourine player Gretchen Givens, Joaquin Moraga music teacher Adam Noel and his sister and singing teacher Leslie Noel were among many who made appearances at Petar's. "I knew Joe since I was very little, I will miss him so much," said Leslie Noel. Noel cared for Campana so much she opened up Studio L above Campana Music so that she too could teach music to the locals. …

Mr. Campana was such a wonderful incredible man. He personally greeted everyone who came into his music store and was always wondering what it was you needed or were looking for. He would give you a hand looking for just the right instrument or the right sheet music or the right strings for your guitar. His helpfulness to the musical community and moms and dads and kids over the years has been a …   more ›

Lamorinda Music Man Joe Campana Dies

At times playfully gruff, but always committed to the music, Joe Campana made his Lafayette store home base for people who loved music.

Joe Campana returned from service in World War II to his native Oakland with the longstanding dream of opening a music store. In 1947, he did just that, opening Campana Music in Lafayette and making the jump over the hill from his new home in Albany every day. The store became a local fixture for hundreds of kids, who first went to Campana's to pick up rental instruments for band practice at local schools and then became lifelong customers, with Joe offering sheet music, lessons and rentals every step of the way. Joe met every request with a World War II-era "can do" affirmation: "You need it by when? You got it, baby!" Campana always said the best way to learn music was "the old fashioned way" and he built his business in the old …
