Mr. Smith did his community a big favor. Who knows how many lives that those punks had terrorizedRead More up until their final attempt. It is sad that people must to go to such extremes to protect themselves. Although we don't know the minds of people, if Mr. Smith only wounded them, it is possible the punks would have returned and killed him.

The bottom line is if these were grown adults no one would care they were shot, well sorry justRead More because they are teenagers does not make it any worst than if they were in their 50's. If roles were reversed and this elderly man broke into the teenagers home they would get a metal of honor if they shot him, same as he should for shooting them. Increased patrols?? Every cop in town has ALWAYS circled the "Bar District" like sharksRead More in chummed water!! I've been going there for 20+ years and have only seen a hand full of fights (Mostly years ago). Walnut Creek Police are always trying to divert attention away from their Barney Fife way of doing business!

Michael - the "progeny" vs. "prodigy" was an example that I was using for theRead More whole board here (or any other board). No, your post was fine and obviously I didn't misunderstand you. I was aiming that more at a lot of folks whom I truly can't understand. You just happened to be lucky enough to misuse a word and then accuse people of not comprehending what they're reading. As far as labelling me/us as woman-haters, again that was aimed at a few other people. And actually, if I am a troll, I just troll for the opportunity to rip on people for using sweeping generalities.

Three trees are marked on a Martinez resident's property for removal, one a 100-year-old olive tree with sentimental value.

We have several redwood trees including one that shades several utilities on the corner of our lotRead More in Clayton. We have always kept the opening cleared and clean, still do. But, several years ago we came home from work to find that several branches had been cut to make a wider opening and the debris left for us to clean up. We suspected it was PG&E at the time. If we had been warned we would have done it ourselves with respect for the tree. Glad they didn't cut it down though. ~Nancy H.
Chris Kapsalis April 23, 2014 at 08:12 am
I think PGE has a deal with a tree company to do most of their tree cutting etc. There is oftenRead More miscommunication between the person who wants tree work done and the people who actually do the work. See it all the time. And buck passing.
Terry Kremin April 23, 2014 at 09:18 am
This is definitely over reaction by PG&E to old bad planning and execution by PG&E, and moreRead More bad planning and execution again by choosing a hack and slash policy over actually assessing what is on the pipelines. Some trees that were planted over the pipeline right of way should never have been planted. That is a public safety issue, and some should be removed both for root control and for inspection access. PG&E SHOULD have been more proactive in the past ensuring the trees didn't get planted in the first place. But then they should have been inspecting welds as well... While some trees should be removed for safety concerns, a tree by tree assessment (root type, true proximity) should be done to determine which should actually be removed. As usual, the truth lies in the middle of the "cut all trees" and the "save all trees" arguments. Hopefully our city council can show the leadership to actually accomplish both necessary public safety clearing and non-problem tree retention, and not forsake safety of people for all the trees. While I love trees, and likewise would hate to see our big old Mulberry in the backyard have to go, if I had to sign a waiver saying that if a gas line break and eruption occurred because of my tree that I absolve PG&E and agree to be liable for all damages to all parties caused by the leak and/or explosion, I would have to favor losing the tree over assuming that responsibility.

Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 05:53 am
So Cow Dung, Gary has said it all in a much more straight-forward way. Everything he says is true,Read More and the information can be found, and checked, in MANY places. Just NOT on the Common Core website.

Why do I have a problem with the Gates foundation? I think I said it before. They funded theRead More organizations that wrote the standards. They funded the organizations that reviewed the standards. They fuinded every group that supposedly had "input" into the development of the standards. There is NO record of what the "input" consisted of, or if any of it was implemented. All we really have on record is the Content advisor for Mathematics, Jim Milgrim, prof. at Stanford, explaining why he refused to endorse the math standard. We have the English Language content advisor, Sandra Slotsky, explaining why she, likewise, could not sign off on the standards. And she explains that she has sat on many such committees before, in her role in developing Massachussetts very well-respected standards, and she said that this is the first time she was required to sign a non-disclosure. She said such committees are usually subject to "Sunshine" laws. These are specific people, highly qualified people, giving specific and detailed testimony. But you would rather keep pointing to the CC website vaguely referring to "how educators were involved".
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 06:39 am
I looked at the Wisconsin link you provided, and it gave a list of teachers on an ELA standardsRead More leadership team. This was out of context, and undated, so I dont really have an indication that it had anything to do with reviewing the CC standards, but assuming you just didn't copy enough pages into the link.....thay could list every teacher in America, by name, school, and department. If there are no records of what, if any recommendations were made, leading to what if any changes to the standards, I dont really see what that would prove. And since, as I have said, teachers and administrators at the local level are presumably under a gag order - if their states have signed agreements similar to NY - I don't know how we can be expected to trust anything about the CC. As I have said, I have several friends from college and HS who have been teaching for 25 + yrs, and my sister-in-law is a Vice Principal at a highly-ranked school in a highly-ranked state - and they all, across the board, HATE the program and what it does to children. And you can read the standards, but you do not have access to the agreements the states have signed, and do not know what other , untried methods of teaching will be mandatory under the Core.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive.
