@ LamorindaMan: My concern is exactly the reverse. The Con Fire pension plan is in terrible shape,…Read More worse than MOFD. It would not surprise me if the 13 cents from Lafayette will not cover their inherited Con Fire retirement obligations plus current service. My guess is that, when the numbers pencil out, Lafayette would need a tax increase to pull its own weight in MOFD. If Lafayette can not pull its own weight, the MOFD board should soundly reject annexation.
LamorindaMan May 21, 2013 at 03:53 pm
And no doubt if Lafayette joined the MOFD mess it would be expected to bail out MOFD's pension…Read More fiasco. No thanks. The ConFire pension mess is enough to deal with it. Lafayette residents shouldn't be the deep pockets solving MOFD's nightmares.
Carol Penskar May 20, 2013 at 01:08 pm
Either way, Lafayette will own its own pension obligations to Con Fire if it pulls out. Lafayette…Read More pays 13 cents of each property tax dollar for fire services. Moraga pays 18 cents and Orinda pays 22 cents. So, in some sense, Lafayette is getting what it pays for. I would love to see the inherited pension math against that 13 cents.

The difference between the two was the office building transaction was a purchase of a 10,000 SF…Read More building for the staff of ten, hoping to rent out excess space for a profit, when Orinda offered up a portion of their earthquake-proof city hall as an alternative (at a zero net cost to the taxpayers). This was empire building (and cost $28,000).
The new fire station would produce a net savings of $2 million per year to be shared by ConFire and MOFD. This was worth the $15,000 "gamble". note: MOFD spends $15,000 every seven hours and I hope they ask ConFire to repay their half.
LamorindaMan May 16, 2013 at 09:10 pm
Forfeiting a $15K deposit. Didn't they forfeit a deposit on the property they were going to buy for…Read More their office building? How much have these guys wasted on deposits?

"Lafayette taxpayers are paying $8 million to ConFire for service."
For that price, would…Read More it be too much to ask to pull the weeds outside the station on St. Mary's Rd? That place looks like a ramshackle abandoned foreclosure. They're also fond of leaving the American flag out in the dark at night.

Lafayette is now in the same position Orinda was back in 1997: Providing major emergency service…Read More subsidies to other parts of the county while receiving sub-standard service itself.

No amount of $$ can make this poor girl whole. The district ignored her complaints and she suffered…Read More terrible sexual abuse for years while the district covered up the failures of its administrators.
Lamorindan May 16, 2013 at 02:15 pm
Incredibly bad decision making by the superintendent and the Board caused innumerable grief to a lot…Read More of families. Let us not forget those responsible and remember that eventually money will be paid by Moragans. The insurance company have settled this amount, but guess whose premiums is going up? You can't spin or sugarcoat this pig!

Fault was proven as the school district did not prevent or stop this abuse by reporting this violent…Read More and damaging act of sexual abuse as expressed in the statement. Each time we see a story of unimaginable horror we ask first, did anyone know and not act? We may not all be saints.....but we are NOT all victims of sexual abuse- my respect goes to all who have worked to evercome such devastating harm.

If anything, it should be RAISED back to where it was before MADD—a formerly noble…Read More organization, now taken over by prohibitionists—got it lowered from 0.10 to 0.08 for no good reason, based on flimsy studies.
If we're seriously discussing lowering it again by cutting it almost in half, we better start lobbying to outlaw driving while deprived of a full night's rest—lack of sleep causes impairment just as bad, if not much worse, than 0.05 BAC.

Yes let's lower it to 0.00. Let's make it illegal to even look at alcohol before driving.
Let's…Read More also require drivers wear helmets while driving because it will save an estimated 1 out of 5 car fatalities according to Australian studies.
Let's raise the driving age to 25. That will save lives.
Let's make the following illegal while driving: talking to passengers, looking away from the road, driving with one hand, using the radio, snacking, thinking, drinking coffee, shaving, makeup, GPS devices. If it saves one life it's worth it.
The goal should be to make driving a zero-risk activity at whatever cost.

I've never driven drunk. I don't drink. I also don't smoke dope.

Um...most of you are idiots in this case. Long live the Lamorinda Patch responses from the…Read More idiots...I see the same in all forums including the pension crap, police using too much force, etc. Most of you hyper analyze everything into a conspiracy theory. The above story is tragic for both families. A young gal screwed up big time...a young dad is gone from his family. The girls family is horrified and in grief as is the victims family. (most likely the girl herself is shamed beyond grief).....It was a brutal fk up on many parts.....
To those above 35 years of age here on the patch.....I ask how many of you in our earlier years drove after having a few drinks? (crickets chirping)....

Wow, well he worked with our daughter at a well-known summer camp, for 2-years. He was actually her…Read More supervisor...My partner and I only met him once and really didn't see this coming. He was friends with her for awhile too, until a riff at the workplace last year. It's sad that better measures are not in place. I hope that if he is innocent, he is set free but if guilty, hope that justice is served and more importantly, that the sweet and innocent children will find healing.
Deborah May 8, 2013 at 06:14 pm
Julie Correa also completely denied Kristin Cunnane's speaking up about her abuse. Jerry Sandusky…Read More continued to deny he'd done anything wrong. That's what predators do. They lie a lot.
That said, yes, innocent people do get falsely accused sometimes. If this is a false accusation then an article exonerating him, should, and I'm sure will, be published and widely distributed. The false accusers' names should also be published, and they should be sued for defamation.

Thank you Gina for the comment. My comment was not meant to sound cold or uncaring. I am sorry…Read More anyone got hurt doing something like that. But I am just trying to point out that people also need to take personal responsibility to not put themselves at risk. People do not collide well with cars and should be careful.

Every day, I too leave the house before sunrise to go to work and live in a neighborhood with very…Read More few street lights. I can't tell you how many times I've not seen people who are walking/jogging, with their dogs, etc. even though I drive really slow with my high beams on. Please people. I beg of you. Wear some reflectors, carry a flashlight, do whatever you can to be seen in the dark. This goes for Moraga Way too.

You are callous. This is rape and suicide! This family is to be applauded for removing the stigma…Read More of rape and publicizing this tragedy. Rapists should not be accorded anonymity, I hope the family publishes their names. Post those names on the internet and create a permanent record for all to see, those bully boys will never escape their crimes.

not to sound callous in a sad time like this but kids have too "soft" these days. Too…Read More cuddled and protected. In the old days we might have called them being a sissy. I got into numerous fights, let alone arguments, for being called by various names for Asian, about my looks, speech, etc. that was in 7th grade in Oakland. Oakland public school! I think i am a more rounded and stronger person because of that experience. Rough it up a little, kids!

Folks IP camera systems which are very affordable and can even email you or text you when there is a…Read More problem at your home. Avoid the old analog systems being dumped on the market usually sold with 4-8 cameras and a recording unit for a sizable chunk of money. With regard to the LaRouche supporters who frequent the Rheem post office, as they stand there, with…Read More a picture of the president defaced to look like Hitler, comparing the effort to increase health care to the Nazis, it certainly is a tribute to the First Amendment that this sort of vile contemptible nonsense is so freely propagated.
