To say that the US is not a Democracy is not accurate. The US is a Constitutional Republic and aRead More Representative Democracy. They are more or less synonyms.

I wish people on this page would look into the ways that "property rights" have beenRead More trumped by the American value of preserving historic landmarks time and time again throughout our land. Respect for our history trumps property rights sometimes - and if Vierra hadn't slithered in so quickly to destroy the Dome, just because he could, he'd have found that out. Of course, that's why he demolished it before anyone could make a move.

CJ - Why post your unrelated comment as a reply to LM's comment, instead of as an independentRead More comment?
CJ April 22, 2013 at 04:45 pm
Lamoman-When I direct it to you I type the name at the header. This was in response to a fishingRead More article the Patch posts to drum up reader comments with no real substance to report.

CJ - "Give it up already." Please read my comment. And then speak intelligently. I'veRead More never supported keeping this theater opened because the owner clearly isn't interested in doing so. So, even if the developer is the operator then I'm still correct. Do you ever think before you type?

What a great idea and use for the Rheem Theater, a piece of history in its own right and a place ofRead More memories for many. My memories of Rheem Theater are from the '50's & '60's, probably one of the best era's in its history. Congratulations & best of luck! --- Ron Mangini (Orinda)

Good job in launching the Classic Hall of Fame by acquiring Mickey Rooney, Cloris Leachman, ChrisRead More Costello, and Sara Karloff on May 10-12. Congratulations! God Bless, and take care!

Think outside the box! In Miami Fl, we had a gorgeous Downtown theatre that was slated for sameRead More fate. Fortunately, a historical preservation group stepped in. Today this beautiful structure is a cultural center and NOT a Dicks Sporting Goods.

I have a ton of great, life-long memories from seeing movies in the dome -- familial, fraternal,Read More romantic -- but it's just a theater. And, importantly, it's not my theater. Sorry to see it go, really, but its time has passed.
LamorindaMan April 23, 2013 at 10:00 pm
This is absurd. Yet, again, we see that a landowner is prohibited from doing as he wishes with hisRead More own property. There is nothing to save. Theater ownership doesn't want the theater anymore. Accept it and move forward.

Thanks for the review, Colby! I agree... this wasn't what I was expecting at all. I had bracedRead More myself for a boring-but-important political thriller, and this was much more entertaining. Although I still fell asleep and need to re-watch it...

It's very good that the goal was achieved in towards to the new elevator. Thank you Joan Bruzzone!Read More It also speaks volumes in where the town of Moraga restaurants and it's establishments are not stepping up to the plate and in my opinion they should. I love bookstores and frequent them, but have such a large professional library and such a backlogRead More of books to read that mostly the ones I buy are treasure hunted at thrift stores or garage sales because they had just come up in conversation or an article, and there they were. But I do buy books at bookstores for gifts, and occasionally buy new ones. I just really don't need anymore books right now. And that's a big shame, since I do really like frequenting and supporting LOCAL retailers. I guess one good way around this is to buy gift certificates at local bookstores, and get other people going in to them.

I vote for "Night of the Hunter," with Robert Mitchum. At his very best, M. portrays aRead More relentlessly sinister psychopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Worse, he is a faux evangelical, hell fire and brimstone spouting "pastor" in pursuit of two cute little kids with intent to do harm if necessary to snatch the little girl's tightly held money stuffed teddy bear. I first viewed this masterfully shot, beautifully lit film as a 17 year old naive student at Berkeley, while babysitting alone in a dark, dingy apartment on Piedmont Avenue. Dang, it was effectively scary. Charles Laughton's first and only directorial film is a work of art on many levels, in my view. I saw Mitchum once again, stalking clean cut attorney Gregory Peck and his photogenic, all-American family in another eerie fear fest, "Cape Fear," a couple nights ago on one of the cable movie channels.

In tribute to "Harold and Maude" I always cue up Cat Stevens when I get to drive over theRead More San Mateo Bridge. For a completely different Ruth Gordon role, check her out in "Rosemary's Baby". She was a terrific actress.

Although I have not watched this movie in over 30 years, I remember it as being a real force ofRead More energy in my life and I saw it then four times. I was younger and related to it very well. I wonder if there are other movies which are similar or which it reminds you of....can anyone think of any? But, Harold and Maude really spoke to the energy and positivity in a person regardless of age, race, class, orientation or profession......atitude with a capital A.

Colby, This is one of my favorite movies, ever: The mom routinely swimming past Harold's floatingRead More body. Harold excusing himself from the blind date his mom set up for him, to ceremonially pour gas on himself and light-up in front of her, to "discretely" drive her away. The preacher's repulsion at the thought of Harold's "young, firm" body in bed with Maude. Priceless... I love Ruth Gordon. She's fearless. And, the views of rolling hills and oaks lets you know it was filmed here. About 35 years ago, Harold and Maude was a recurring feature -- along with Rocky Horror -- at the El Rey on Main St. That's where I first saw it. Thanks for sharing. You're right, it's timeless.

Hello Colby, The industry loves to copy and paste sometimes clearly showing its hand and sometimesRead More trying to hide it. The last original movie I watched was Inception. What was the last good movie you watched?
Colby Wayne Heyer January 14, 2013 at 01:18 pm
Exactly, and this is why Avatar didn't blow my mind. Yes, the 3D technology used in filming wasRead More pretty awesome, but the story-line wasn't anything special. Especially because I think Dances with Wolves was way better. The political aspect of awards shows like the Golden Globes, and the Oscars is usually what drives me to avoid them. I don't care what an actor or actress has to say about politics, and I hate when they use their acceptance speech as a soap box. Last night's Golden Globes didn't bother me as much as I thought (Probably because I had it on my DVR so I could fast forward through whatever I wanted) but I do understand what you are talking about when it comes to political influence within Hollywood.
