The Weekender: Oktoberfest, College Inauguration, Safety Fair

Some of the events and activities happening this weekend in Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda

As you plan your weekend, here are some of the things happening in the Lamorinda area.

On Thursday evening, the second in a series of community workshops organized by Moraga Citizens Network will be held.

The Community Leadership Series discussion will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Serbian Cultural Center, 1700 School St.

The topic will be "Cultivating a Vision Within Your Organization and Connecting the Dots with Possible Partners."

On Friday afternoon, St. Mary's College in Moraga will hold an inauguration ceremony for its new president.

The inaugural for James Donahue will be at 3 p.m. on the Chapel Lawn.

On Friday evening, the Lamorinda Democratic Club will host a discussion on science, technology, engineering and math in California.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center.

On Saturday morning, a safety fair will be held in Lafayette.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Stanley Middle School, 3455 School St.

They'll be demonstrations on fire extinguisher use, bicycle safety, child car seat installations and other activities.

Law enforcement authorities as well as the American Red Cross and the Community Emergency Response Team will be there.

Also on Saturday morning, a seminar on "Rethinking Your Lawn" will be held at 10 a.m. at Orchard Nursery, 4010 Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Lafayette.

The 90-minute talk will include design and plant selections as well as how to convert your lawn to something that uses less water.

On Sunday afternoon, the annual Oktoberfest celebration will be held in Moraga.

The event starts at 2 p.m. at the Hacienda de las Flores, 2100 Donald Drive.

They'll be music, dancing, food and, of course, beer. They'll also be games and activities for children.

Also on Sunday evening, a seminar on social media and bullying will be held at 6 p.m. at the Lamorinda Family Center at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette.

Two experts will discuss the realities children face in the social media world and coping skills parents can pass along to these youngsters.
