The first phase of a food drive in Orinda has produced more than 5,000 pounds of canned goods.

Collection barrels for the "Cans for a Cause" drive were placed on city streets, the Orinda Union School District office and four local schools.

Republic Services, formerly Allied Waste Services, matched the donated goods, bringing the total to 5,582 pounds of food.

The donations were delivered to The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano by Republic Services employees.

The second phase of the food drive will be held from Feb. 3 to Feb. 14 at Glorietta Elementary School.
