Lafayette Man Reported Missing During Labor Day Tubing Excursion

Brett Olson, a Lafayette resident and 2010 graduate of Acalanes High School, is the subject of an intense search along the Sacramento River after a weekend tubing trip with friends.

Sheriff's Deputies in Butte and Glenn counties have launched an air and ground search for a missing Lafayette man who reportedly walked away from friends during a tubing trip down the Sacramento River Sunday.

Brett Olson, 20, went missing during the annual Chico Float down the Sacramento, a popular outing for Chico State students. Olson was last seen around 3 p.m. Sunday when he walked away from a group of friends at a popular "haul-out" point called Beer Can Beach. The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student travelled to Chico to be with friends over the Labor Day weekend.

Thousands of people take part in the popular Labor Day event.

Police have been looking for Olson with aircraft and a ground search and plan to scan the areas near Ord Bend Park north toward Beer Can Beach today, Tuesday. A person matching Olson's general description was reportedly spotted in the Pine Creek Wilderness and a search of that area is also being planned.

A Glenn County Sheriff's dispatcher said Wave Runners are currently searching  the riverbanks where Olson's float group was last seen.

Olson is described as 6' - 6'2" tall, 150-160 lbs. with brown hair and brown eyes. Friends ask that you call the Glenn County Sheriff's Office at (530) 934-6431 if you have information as to his whereabouts.

Dearest Brett, your good/ best friend Colin emptied out his college fund tonight and offered it up to your reward fund and we matched it. He said there was NO amount of money that would make him as happy as SIMPY having YOU BACK. He won't be the same until he is laughing at your clever texts and has you as his college neighbor for the 3rd year in a row again. He has been talking to the police, the television, the reporters. He doesn't sleep or eat, he is physically sick, and thinks constantly of you, you, you. You must come home soon - to everyone who loves you so very much. Our prayers are guiding you home, Brett. Follow them. Come home!

This is today's (Saturday 9/8/12) request for volunteers: WE WANT AS MANY PEOPLE POSSIBLE TO MEET AT THE STARBUCKS AT 246 BROADWAY STREET IN DOWNTOWN CHICO AT 10 AM. IF YOU WERE THINKING OF COMING UP TO HELP, WE CAN USE ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET. We will be organizing groups to cover different sections of the farmers market, spreading awareness and fliers. The fliers we will have available will be updated with the $10,000 dollar reward. We believe this added motivation will cause a lot more pro-activity among the Chico Locals. THEN WE WILL HAVE A SECOND MEETING AT 1:00pm AT THE SAME STARBUCKS. IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT BY 10, PLEASE MAKE IT UP BY 1. At the second meeting we will organize activities for the rest of the day. Again, the Olson family cannot express how thankful they are for the massive support. Keep the love flowing!

Update: The reward is now $50,000 and they need help in Chico still. This is today's (Sunday 9/9/12) announcement: ATTENTION EVERYONE IN CHICO: Today's search is going to be completely revolved around the lead Jason Conrad gave us. WE ARE GOING TO CHANGE THE LOCATION OF OUR MEETING TO AT SAFEWAY ON 1016 WEST SACRAMENTO AVENUE (next to walgreens, corner of nord and west sac) AT 10:00am SO WE ARE CENTRAL TO THE LOCATION BRETT WAS LAST SPOTTED. WE ARE WORKING SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE POLICE, SO OUR SEARCH WILL BE EXTREMELY ORGANIZED AND EFFICIENT. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT EVERYONE SHOWS UP TO OUR EVENT AT 10:00am INSTEAD OF SEARCHING ON THEIR OWN. OUR DIRECTION AND LEADERSHIP WILL VASTLY IMPROVE CHANCES OF FINDING BRETT. If you have been a leader in our previous volunteer searches, expect a call in the morning, and prepare to come early. Thank you all, and keep the prayers and positivity flowing! http://www.facebook.com/events/113674542116042/?context=create

Your message is so touching! Friendships are not replaceable. I so hope your son is able to get over the loss of his dear friend...My sister lived three doors down from the Olsons and I met Liz several times at get togethers at my sisters. She will attend the funeral for Brett. I live in San Luis Obispo county where Cal Poly is located and the coverage of Brett's disapperance, then vigil and memorial have been headlines in our news~both t.v. and radio. What a remarkable young man and family. May Colin find faith in God that there was a reason for us all to lose Brett.
