OMPA Championship Swim Meet Kicks Off Friday

Wondering what's up with all the car-top shark fins and alligators? One of the largest recreational swim meets in the country gets underway Friday, right here in Moraga.

The 55th Orinda Moraga Pool Association championship meet runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Soda Aquatic Center at Campolindo High School. The meet features 1,805 swimmers from the Lamorinda area swimming in 84 events spread over the three days. Swimmers range in age from 4-year-olds just starting the sport to 18-year-olds closing out their recreational swimming career. The meet is the culmination of the recreational swimming season in Lamorinda.

Friday night's events kick off at 5 p.m. with the girls 7-8 Individual Medley and ends about 7:30 p.m. with the boys 15-18 Individual Medley.

Saturday focuses on freestyle, breaststroke and the medley relay. Saturday starts at 9 a.m. for preliminaries of freestyle; breaststroke preliminaries start just after noon. Finals for freestyle should kick off at 3:30 p.m. and breaststroke finals are scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m. The medley relays are scheduled for a 5:15 p.m. start.

Expect to see Rockwellian moments a-plenty from the littlest butterfly swimmers trying their hardest to get to the other side of the pool to NCAA athletes swimming a swan song with their recreational swim teammates.
