Call it a tsunami, a stampede, a massacre or whatever you like.

Any of those terms would easily describe No. 2 seeded 18-8 drubbing of Alameda on Saturday at Miramonte High in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division I boys water polo playoffs.

"Our counter-attack really helped us tonight," Miramonte coach James Lathrop said.

A total of 10 different Matadors scored goals, led by Robbie Flugge and Joey Fabian with three each,  and Miramonte (19-5) scored 11 unanswered goals in the opening period to all but end the game in the first seven minutes of play.

"At this point in the season you are hoping that you are playing your best," Lathrop said.

Five different Miramonte players scored in the opening frame and it wasn't until a minute into the second period before the Hornets (14-13) finally got on the board on the first of Daniel Daniel's six goals. But by then it was already over.

"A lot of our guys play on the same team as Daniel in the summer," Lathrop said. "We knew we had to key on him and slow him down."

Miramonte's fast start out of the gate took a lot of pressure off of the Matadors' defense when it came to Daniel, making Daniel's late scoring run nothing more than padding his stats,

The victory moved the No. 2 seeded Matadors into a second round showdown against No. 7 Foothill on Tuesday afternoon at Miramonte High. Foothill advanced to the second round behind a 9-7 victory over California High earlier in the day during a five-game schedule of playoff games played at the Miramonte High pool.
