Gaels Head Down Under to Hero's Home Town

St. Mary's basketball team is visiting the home town of Gaels legend Matthew Dellavedova.

As a recent story in the local paper The Bendigo Advertiser points out, St. Mary's basketball legend Matthew Dellavedova could walk down the street of his home town, Maryborough, Victoria, Australia without being noticed. But in Moraga, CA, he would be mobbed by admirers.

Dellavedova, one of the highest scoring players in Gael basketball history, is now at the Cleavland Cavaliers training camp. But the St. Mary's team is in Dellavedova's home town, to get a sense of where he came from, and hoping some of his magic rubs off on the players this season.

"One of the things we really wanted to do was come to Maryborough and see where Matthew Dellavedova grew up,’’ coach Randy Bennett told the Advertiser.
“He’s a special guy not just to our basketball program, but to our whole school and community in Moraga."

Dellavedova and fellow Aussie Patrick Mills, also a St. Mary's alum, represented Australia in the 2012 Olympics.
