The Campolindo High football team couldn't overcome its early mistakes against host Dougherty Valley, losing the Diablo Foothill Athletic League opener 28-14.

Entering the game with a 4-0 record in non-league play, the Cougars (0-1 DFAL) made too many mistakes early in the game and were unable to stop the Wildcats (3-2, 1-0) formidable running game when they had to.

"The penalties have been hurting us all preseason long," Campolindo coach Kevin Macy said. "We're a young, inexperienced team and it hurt us on the first drive."

On the game's first drive, the Cougars suffered back-to-back penalties while driving inside Dougherty Valley territory. A delay of game penalty put Campolindo back to the 42-yard line, soon followed by a false start. This put the Cougars at less-than-ideal third-and-38. The Cougars managed to drive all the way to the Wildcats 17 yard-line, but were stopped short with a turnover on downs.

In Dougherty Valley's possession, it chugged its way to strike first blood and take the lead on senior running back Michael Spivey's seven-yard touchdown run.

It was an uphill climb for Campolindo from there.

Campolindo got back to tie it with an epic seven-and-a-half minute drive that culminated in a touchdown scramble by quarterback Nick Zolintakis. But with less than a minute to play in the half, Dougherty Valley's Lucas Raventos' 34-yard rushing touchdown gave the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish.

The Cougars put up a valiant effort, going through the air for the most part of the second half.

Sophomore quarterback Brett Stephens finished 18-for-35 with 216 yards, but it wasn't enough.

After cutting the lead 28-14, the Cougars looked poised to come from behind. Inside the Dougherty Valley 10-yard line, Stephens tossed the ball in the end zone only to be intercepted by defensive back Landon Crawl. Zolintakis went 1-for-4 with 14 yards as Campolindo's other quarterback but he did most of his damage on the ground, rushing for 53 yards.

Cougars wide reciever Karl Thornton led all recievers with 84 yards on six receptions, including three-straight receptions in the fourth quarter to keep Campolindo's hopes alive.

Reiner Ebarle led Campolind with 70 yards on seven carries, with his longest run being a 29-yarder.

Campolindo's next game is Friday, Oct. 8 at home against Dublin.
