Campolindo Defeats Acalanes, 24-14, In Battle Of Unbeaten Football Teams

Excitement high at the battle of undefeated rival football teams

Campolindo High used a strong second half to defeat Acalanes High, 24-14, in a battle of undefeated football teams.

Campolindo is now 5-0 on the season. The Cougars will play Miramonte High at home next Friday.

Miramonte blanked Dublin High, 35-0, on Friday night to improve their record to 4-1.

Acalanes is also now 4-1. The Dons will play Las Lomas High in Walnut Creek next Friday.

On Friday evening at Acalanes High, Campolindo got on the board on their first series, kicking a field goal for a 3-0 lead with 7:38 left in the first period.

Acalanes came right back with a long drive and scored on a 10-yard pass play to take a 7-3 lead.

On the first play of the second quarter, Acalanes intercepted a Campolindo pass, but the Cougar defense held and got their team the ball back.

Campolindo drove down the field and scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run for a 10-7 lead with 7:20 left in the half.

That was the score when the teams went into the locker rooms at halftime.

In the third quarter, Acalanes' first drive stalled at midfield and the Dons punted.

Campolindo put together a long drive and scored another touchdown on a short slant pass to grab a 17-7 lead with 3:19 to play in the third period.

The Cougars then went on a long drive to start the fourth quarter, scoring on a short run to increase their lead to 24-7 with 6:49 to play.

Acalanes drove into Campolindo territory, but the Cougars intercepted a pass near the 10-yard line.

However, on 4th down inside their 10, Campolindo tried a fake punt and their long pass was incomplete.

Acalanes took over on downs and punched the ball in to make it 24-14.

The Dons tried an onside kick, but Campolindo recovered and ran out the clock.

The energy was high as Friday night's football battle got under way.

On the Acalanes side, the Blue and White Squad had packed the southern end of the bleachers.

Alexander Grace, an Acalanes junior, said this game would be redemption for last year's last-second 40-39 loss to Campolindo.

He said Acalanes had a "white out" at school on Friday, where students wore white to support their football team.

He predicted the winner of this game would go on to win the league championship.

Grace said there was no love loss between the two campuses.

"As a school, we absolutely hate Campo," he said.

On the Campolindo side, Jeremy Raine and Matt O'Reilly were in middle of a pack of red-shirted students.

"I am so pumped up and I don't even play football," said Raine.

O'Reilly, a basketball player at Campolindo, said he used to live in Lafayette and he's glad he is attending Campolindo.

"I like it so much better," he said.

Both students said they went shirtless during lunch period Friday with their chests painted red.

They predicted a Campolindo victory, saying Acalanes had not played any tough opponents yet this season.

He noted Campolindo defeated highly ranked El Cerrito High last week.

The students joked that tonight's game was a "warm up" for some of Campolindo's tougher games later this year.
