District Attorney Investigating Lamorinda Swim League; Alleged Financial Irregularities by Former Board Member

A former board member of a well-known local swimming league is under investigation by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office after rumors of alleged financial improprieties began to surface last Fall.

The Contra Costa County Distict Attorney's office is pursuing a criminal complaint against a former board member of a well-known local swimming league after allegations of financial irregularities began to surface at the league last Fall.

Representatives from several local swim clubs said the allegation stems from charges that a former Diablo Community Swim League (DCSL) board member misappropriated league monies during their tenure.

Those charges came to light last year and were immediately referred to the responsible law enforcement agencies, Las Trampas Swim Club President and DCSL board member Steven McDonald said Tuesday.

"Each of the eight teams in the league send a representative to DCSL to serve on their board," McDonald said. "It appears one of those board members - who is no longer with the league - is under investigation by the district attorney."

League insiders declined to name the person under investigation or say how much money may have been misappropriated.

Warren Heffelfinger, president of the in Lafayette - one of eight recreational swim teams that compete under DCSL auspices during the swim season - said his club was notified by a league contact that a possible criminal case was pending last year.

"I was made aware something was amiss by my predecessor," he said. "We took immediate steps to make sure our own house was in order with double and triple audits and everything checks out."

Along with Rancho Colorados, member DCSL teams include the Rancho San Miguel Polar Bears of Walnut Creek; the Livorna Dolphins of Walnut Creek, Las Trampas Swim Club of Lafayette, Scottsdale Swim Team of Walnut Creek, Springwood Swim Club of Concord, Walnut Country of Concord and the Pleasant Hill Aquatics.
