Campolindo High girls golf coach Valerie Robertson expects her team to build upon its second-place finish in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League from last season. Success is expected, but top-level results aren't demanded. Instead, Robertson wants her players to have fun and develop an appreciation of the game.

"They're young, and the game of golf is pressure enough all by itself," Robertson said. "We don't need to add to that. We're supportive. If we come in first that's great, but if not, that's okay, as long as they're improving and learning the etiquette of the game."

Not that the Cougars lack competitors.

Sami Chan made the All-DFAL first team as a freshman and returns as one of the Cougars' leaders for her sophomore season. Fellow sophomore Marissa Chan is also expected to emerge as one of the best in the league this season, Robertson said.

"They just shoot low scores," Robertson said. "It's that simple. They're young, but they're steady and experienced golfers who are capable of shooting low scores."

Campolindo lost four seniors from last year's team, but only two players from the starting six. Each member of the starting six this season will have experience with the team.

"We have a lot of depth," Robertson said. "One through six, we're solid."

The Cougars finished 10-2 last season, with both losses coming against Miramonte. Miramonte, Acalanes and Campolindo are among the only programs in the DFAL that consistently draw so much interest from potential players that they have to hold tryouts.

"We don't lack players; that's for sure," said Robertson. "That's one of the pros of being at Campo. We always get a lot of girls who want to play, and we've been able to build up a good core."
