When it comes time for postseason play, any coach in the business will tell you it's survive and advance.

The Diablo Foothill Athletic League can be looked at the same way when it comes to the quality of its boys basketball teams.

Campolindo High survived in Dublin on Tuesday, holding off the Gaels 68-58 to earn its first league win of the season.

"It came down to effort tonight," Campo coach Matt Watson said. "This league is a grind. You can't take a night off ever. You've got to take it one game at a time."

Campo's John Schmitz (16 points) and Carl King (15 points) led the way for the Cougars.

Schmitz got the Cougars off and rolling quickly by scoring his team's first 10 points, including two treys.

The first half saw an up-and-down tempo as both teams traded baskets for much of the first two quarters. Dublin took its first lead of the game on a Joe McGlaston three-pointer to give the Gaels a 25-24 lead with four minutes left in the first half. The teams would go into the break tied at 30.

"Dublin is a very physical team," Watson said. "We didn't want to get pushed around."

Campo opened the third quarter with a 15-9 run to take a 45-39 lead with 2:46 left in the third. A three-pointer to end the quarter by King would give the Cougars a 50-46 lead.

"We didn't play with a lot of passion and energy tonight," Dublin coach Tom Costello said. "We need to pick it up."

McGlaston led the Gaels with 19 points.

After Dublin cut the deficit to 59-55 with 1:36 left, Campo reeled of a quick 8-0 run in the final minute pull away.

"We knew coming in that we had a size advantage," Costello said. "We tried to increase the tempo and push the ball a little bit. Our bodies just didn't respond to it.We played well in spurts. Our defense needs work."

The Campo defense turned up the heat in the fourth quarter, holding the Gaels to just two fields goals in the final eight minutes.

"We wanted to slow them down," Watson said. "You just get lucky sometimes."

Campo will travel to Orinda on Friday to take on rival Miramonte, while the Gaels will host Las Lomas.

"They are our biggest rival," Watson said of the Matadors. "It's an emotional game. They are always contested games, nothing's going to change."
