Boo! Get Spooky With a Zombie

Nothing sends a shiver down my spine like the thought of a cocktail featuring a half ounce of 151-proof rum floating on top.

There is a special night of the year when the boundaries between this world and the next are blurred unleashing twisted souls who roam the night seeking to slake their desire for succulent, living flesh.  Of course, that could describe every Friday and Saturday night on the nightclub circuit, but I’m talking about Halloween.

It’s the spookiest time of the year and nothing sends a shiver down my spine like the thought of a cocktail featuring a half ounce of 151-proof rum floating on top.  So for Halloween, I’m mixing up a Zombie.

Oddly, the Zombie was not created for Halloween, but is the product of the Tiki bar culture—it’s really kind of a pimped .  The name is great marketing and the drink’s legend grew among rumors that bars would serve no more than two per customer because of the amount of alcohol.  I’m not sure how much of that is true and how much is hyperbole, but I do know that I’ve never had more than one at a sitting… at least I don’t remember having more than one at a sitting.

The Zombie is definitely one of the more fun themed drinks out there, but it’s not really designed for a home bar or novice bartender.  Many recipes call for specialty booze like apricot brandy, Cherry Heering, or Pernode, which are not really practical to keep in a home bar just for one drink.  Most recipes also call for sugar, which I’m categorically opposed to stocking in a party bar.  This recipe is streamlined to limit the specialty booze and eliminate sugar.  I’ve also tried to tweak the recipe to include ingredients that you might already have on hand for more common tropical drinks, like the .

                                                  Ingredients

* 2 oz. Light Rum  * 1 oz. Dark Rum  * 1 oz. Triple Sec  * 1 oz. Pineapple Juice  * 1 oz. Orange Juice  * 1 oz. Lime Juice  * ½ oz. 151-Proof Rum  * 1 Dash Grenadine

With ice in a shaker, pour in the rum, triple sec, and fruit juices.  Give it all a giggle and pour into an 8-12 oz. glass with ice.  Float the 151 rum on the top and add the grenadine.  A Zombie is flammable once you add the 151, so avoid open flames and if you drink more than two, try to avoid eating the flesh of the living.  Happy Halloween!
