Superintendent: 'Fundamentally a Safe, Respectful School Community'

Piedmont Unified School District officials have been largely quiet on the "fantasy slut league" issue this week but reportedly spent time in meetings and fielding numerous phone calls from parents and the media.

What has apparently been an open secret at Piedmont High School for several years — the existence of a "Fantasy Slut League" where male varsity athletes amass "points" for sexual activity with female students — became public Friday when the school district issued a notice to parents of PHS students.

PUSD Superintendent Constance Hubbard emailed the following written statement Monday in response to Piedmont Patch's request for comment:

"This is a matter of school and family working together to support our teens to make good choices and to treat each other with respect and dignity. We wanted to communicate to families to encourage a dialogue and to inform parents of what we as a school community are doing to proactively address activities that are detrimental to the culture we want for our students. We are confident that our students are capable and willing to step up to the challenge to be active participants in strengthening what is fundamentally a safe, respectful school community."

Richard (Rick) Raushenbush, president of the PUSD Board of Education, said only, "This matter is being handled by the District Administration and you should contact Connie Hubbard with any inquiries," and Piedmont High School Principal Rich Kitchens has not responded to Patch's request for comment.

Some Piedmont Patch readers who commented on earlier articles reported being barraged with phone calls from members of the media Monday and over the weekend. The issue has received wide coverage nationally in newspapers, blogs and television.

The existence of the "fantasy slut league" came to public attention last Friday when Kitchens sent a letter to parents of PHS students outlining the issue and school officials' plans to address concerns with students.
