Students Shake Hips For Hula Record

Del Rey Elementary in Orinda sets sights on Guinness record for largest hula hoop workout.

For Del Rey Elementary School, March Madness is all about hoops.

Hula hoops.

The Orinda school will take a crack at cracking the Guinness Book world record for "largest hula hoop workout." More than 400 students are expected to do a workout routine on the playground, set to music, wrote organizer Eric Menke, a school parent.

The record attempt has been sanctioned by the Guinness Book of World Records, said Menke.

After the teaching moment of "you are as special as you think you are, so dream BIG," said Menke, the hula hoops will be donated to Community Education Partnership, which provides school supplies to homeless children in the Bay Area.

The record on the books now is 290 students at Allen Elementary School in Hutchinson, Kan.

The record is due to fall at 10 a.m. Monday at Del Rey Elementary, 25 El Camino Moraga, Orinda.
