Spring Break - Lamorinda-Style

Grab the aloha shirts and umbrella drinks, book a flight to tour an ivy-draped college, Lamorinda kids and parents alike are embracing Spring Break.

Lamorinda kids dumped those massive backpacks they trundle around, banged out a Spring Break assignment or two (nasty teachers) and settled in for a week of blissful recreation with minimal adult intervention -- doing what kids do.

The break seems to have helped. They're breathing a little easier, don't seem quite as stressed. One of ours joined classmates for a trip to Washington, D.C. and aside from a bout with 737 Flu appeared to have had a grand time seeing the sights and roaming the Nation's Capitol with the BFF's.

Man Child caught a huge break, had the number of practices and scrimmages his basketball league has him signed up for slashed from 57 a day to a mere dozen or so. We've bought stock in Gatorade as he's pounding that stuff down like a South of Market mendicant, leaving a trail of empty plastic bottles around the house like bread crumbs.

"I have a drinking problem," he stated somberly, minutes before completing the Moraga Spring Break tradition and throwing himself into the hot tub (yes, we have a hot tub. We know - "how sixties!"), Gatorade in hand.

Neighbors with older kids are all off checking out colleges across the country and the town has a sort of ghost town feel. She Who Must Remodel is in the throes of a bathroom renovation and dang if that doesn't make your wallet pucker nowadays -- pulling permits alone almost made me want to throw it all in, change my name, and move into a beach-front palapa down south of the border.

It's back to school for the kids on Monday, of course, and plenty to do around the rancho, but the last week had a nice pace to it and we hope everyone had a good time doing whatever they chose to do. What'd you do with your Spring Break?

Wanting to know what Ridiculously Photogenic Guy did for Spring Break. Nothing else really matters.

While the older child went off to Mexico to build houses (as did quite a few other youthful Lamorindans), the younger child has had us all to himself. This preview of coming attractions of three years hence -- when the older child goes away somewhere to pretend to study -- has been an interesting study in different family dynamics. The younger child has been much less little-brotherish, and quite a bit more responsible. Everything will revert to normal next week, undoubtedly, but the time spent with and devoted to just the one child has been pleasant for all of us.

Writing from Poipu Beach, Kauai. Our weather is better than in Mexico and the water is bluer. I'd send pictures but then I'd have to unwrap my hand from around my daiquiri. Ever notice how pineapple tastes over here? I'm staying.

Dave, I had the same deal. Interesting having an only child to travel with before the college years. Just a taste of things to come but she had us all to herself and loved it but still missed her brother.

We eschewed Hawaii this year and kept heading west for Japan. Got lucky with cherry blossom season. Photo attached. I'm glad I brought some pre-recorded leaf blower noises on my iPhone. Singing birds and burbling water messes with my inner peace.
Not looking forward to the return trek tomorrow.

Japan? Now that's a trip. I'm sitting home, watching the lawn grow.

I am so glad people are starting to remodel again. The builders and tile sellers might not starve to death.
