Something for Everyone at Tuesday's Moraga School Board Meeting

Sport field renovations, bullying, parcel tax consulting, budget updates and teachers' contracts are all on the agenda Tuesday night.

The conceptual plan to renovate the fields at Camino Pablo Elementary school is up for discussion during Tuesday's meeting of the Moraga School District board, with the landscape architect providing input on the project. The renovation is the result of a joint agreement between the district and the Town of Moraga, using Measure WW funds.

The board will also ask school district staff to negotiate with the Moraga Teachers’ Association about total compensation, teacher evaluation and teaching hours. The public may comment on the district’s initial proposal to the MTA as well as the MTA’s initial proposal to the district. A following agenda item analysis from the district recommends that the board accept the MTA proposal regarding salary and benefits, teaching hours, leaves and absences and the school calendar.

The board will also notify temporary teachers who “serve in place of teachers on leave, specially funded positions or teachers who were sharing positions” that their services will not be required in the next school year, according to the district analysis.

“The District, parents and students have benefitted greatly from having these highly qualified teachers working with our students," district analysis states. "We appreciate their service and professionalism.”

The board will also also get updated numbers from the childcare director on this self-funded program, offered to elementary school families.

The board will also review increasing user fees for facilities owned by the school district. The recommendation under discussion increases user fees by 10 percent starting July 2011.

In other action, the board is expected to vote on whether to engage the consulting services of The Center for Community Opinion to determine the viability of a parcel tax for the Moraga School District. The contract, if approved, cannot exceed $30,000.

Superintendent Bruce Burns is also expected to provide a budget update as the board prepares for its March meeting. Burns will outline “possible outcomes of the Governor’s budget plan and the impact of an extension of existing state taxes,” according to the agenda item analysis from the district.

Based on the work of the management team of the district and Joaquin Moraga’s Intermediate School Climate Committee, the board will discuss policy for identifying and reporting bullying.

The governing board of the Moraga School District meets February 8 in the Joaquin Moraga school auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.
