Moraga Students Show Their Talent

Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends gathered to hear students play, sing and soliloquize at the MEF showcase.

After a wet and miserable start to the week, the sun shone onto the Moraga Commons Wednesday night, highlighting the Moraga Education Foundation’s Spring Showcase. The goal of the event was to let the Moraga community experience the music and arts programs, which are fully funded by MEF at the elementary and intermediate schools and partially funded by MEF at Campolindo high school.

The evening kicked off with Diana Obrand, president of MEF, thanking donors for their support. MEF is at 80 percent of its goal of raising $1.6 million to support Moraga schools.

Moraga Mayor Karen Mendonca thanked the community for their support of the schools and noted the Forbes.com article listing . She stated that this was “due to the outstanding community and parents” that populate Moraga.

The elementary schools combined choir, led by Carol St. Claire, offered a rousing rendition of “The Hills of Moraga.” The choir, more than 100 strong, segued into a selection of foods songs, including the traditional “The Candy Man” and the more modern “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.”

Campolindo High School’s chamber singers, jazz ensemble and drama each performed selections of a variety of genres from old-school jazz to a current hit by Cee Lo Green – using the clean version, of course.

Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School’s symphonic band also gave an impressive performance of "Gypsy Dance," led by teacher Adam Noel.

Art created by students from kindergarten through high school was also on display,  and food was provided by Lamorinda Pizza.  Summer’s officially been kicked off, folks.
