Lamorinda Schools' Truancy Rates Well Below State Average

The truancy rate at Lamorinda schools is well below other Contra Costa County districts, according to information released by the state superintendent's office.

In fact, in two Lamorinda districts truancy is virtually non-existent.

Truancy is defined as any student who misses 30 minutes or more of class time without a valid excuse at least three times in one school year.

Not surprisingly, high schools have the highest truancy rates.

The state data shows Las Lomas High had the highest rate in the region with 26 percent of its students reported as truant during the 2011-2012 school year.

Campolindo had the lowest high school rate with 5 percent.

At the middle school and elementary school level, Lafayette has the highest truancy rate among the three towns.

The Lafayette school district recorded a 7.4 percent truancy rate, still well below state and county averages. Happy Valley Elementary was above any other primary school with a 21 percent rate. Lafayette Elementary was next with 17 percent.

Truants, on the other hand, are difficult to find in the Orinda and Moraga elementary districts.

In each district, only two students were reported truant in the 2011-2012 school year.
