Lafayette Schools Installing New Locks

Cost of about $60,000 for new locks at four elementary schools and Stanley Middle School.

The Lafayette School District is installing new locks on classroom doors in an effort to protect students from the specter of mass classroom violence.

“It was an idea that came from the teachers, and this has been a year where we’ve really spent quite a bit of time looking at the steps we can take to keep our kids and our teachers safer,” Superintendent Fred Brill told KCBS News.

It would cost the district less than $60,000 to replace the locks at its four elementary schools and a middle school, Brill told the Contra Costa Times.

I'm guessing your subtitle should read $60,000 and not $6,000. 4 elementary schools = a lot of doors and locks are expensive so $60K seems like the right number.

I just corrected that, Diver. Thanks for reading more carefully than I did! -- Lance Howland, Patch editor

More knee-jerk reaction. With over 98,000 public schools and over 33,000 private schools, the probability of *anyone* at your school being assaulted with a firearm is roughly 1,000 times less likely than being hit by a bus full of nuns, followed by being struck by lightning, twice.

Why do the locks need to be changed? All the campuses are open air. What does this accomplish? Were there too many spares?

I believe these locks allow the teachers to lock the doors from the inside - whereas, if I correctly understood the interview with Brill, that's not currently an option.

That makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying.
