Lafayette School District Holds Last Meeting on Proposed Budget Cuts Wednesday

The last of three meetings called to assess public and parental interest in the Lafayette School District's budget plan gets underway Wednesday.

The last of three special meetings convened to gauge public sentiment on the Lafayette School District's proposed budget reduction plan gets underway at Stanley Middle School Wednesday.

More than 300 people turned out for the first two meetings, listening as Superintendent Fred Brill pressed for input on where and how to trim roughly $1 million to $1.2 million from the 2011-2012 budget.

Parents, teachers and community members say any future cuts would nick bone but by law the school board must notify any certificate employees by March 15 if their services will no longer be needed and that deadline is looming.

At stake are the district's music and science program for K-5; possible loss of four elementary school teachers; a resultant jump in class size to more than 30 students in the 4th grade and cutting instructional days down to 178 days.

The meeting starts tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at Stanley Middle School.
