Gaels Flock Back to Moraga, New Students Move In Thursday

This weekend is welcome weekend for new Saint Mary's students, with classes starting Monday. The beginning of the school year also heralds arrival of the Saint Mary's Fall 2012 creative Writing Reading Series, with plenty of well-known authors scheduled.

Don’t be surprised if you see an unusual amount of moving trucks in Moraga this week.

This weekend is the Weekend of Welcome for new Saint Mary’s students, and new Gaels will be moving in on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m., when 600 new freshmen descend on the town of Moraga and set up study space on the Saint Mary's campus.

Friday will be full of welcome activities and workshops for the new arrivals. The new students will spend Saturday volunteering for a day of service, and on Sunday, students will take part in a Bay Area scavenger hunt as they get to know the area.

With the start of the new school year also comes Saint Mary’s Fall 2012 Creative Writing Reading Series, which will start up in September.

The first event will take place on Sept. 12, with Saint Mary’s alumni former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass and Tom Meschery, poet, author, teacher and former Golden State Warrior, kicking off the series.

The series will continue through the fall with Lysley Tenorio, Linda Spalding and Michael Palmer.
