Emilia Serrano (Communication, 1995) describes herself as "a first-generation, tomboy Mexican with pretty hair. My parents were auto workers and our Mexican culture was embedded in our everyday life, even when we moved from the East Bay to the Midwest. We were the only Mexican family in our town. That was crazy. Only much later did I realize I had a great place to mine stories." After she started a career in advertising, friends in the television business encouraged her to mine those family stories for material. Her new career really took off after she completed the National Latino Media Council's Television Writers Program, developed to prepare and place Latinos in writing jobs for the major television networks. She has written for such shows as "Rizzoli & Isles," "My Generation," and, most recently, the Fox network show "The Finder," a spin-off from its popular "BONES" series.
Emilia is excited to return to Saint Mary's to tell the story of her career as a storyteller and to encourage others interested in pursuing work in Hollywood.
English and Communication majors and Creative Writing Minors curious about writing careers will find it particularly interesting. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
