An Englishwoman in California

Zoe Klippert will discuss her book, An Englishwoman in California:  the letters of Catherine Hubback 1871-76.   Mrs. Hubback was a niece of Jane Austen and a novelist herself.  She moved to Oakland in 1871 and set up house with her son Edward while he commuted to San Francisco by ferry to his job at a wheat brokerage.  Her letters home to her eldest son John tell of her day to day life and give a perspective on America and its inhabitants that is often amusing and always insightful.  The landscape she describes and travels in will be recognizable to present day readers.

Zoe Klippert is a freelance editor and longtime Moraga resident.
