Del Rey Schoolkids Improvise, Take Second Place In Odyssey Competition

Local kids learn that it takes many talents and teamwork to solve problems.

Congratulations to Del Rey School's 5th Grade Odyssey of the Mind team – Jonathan Holobetz, Nick Luckenbach, Nikhil Shastri, Matt Mahoney, and Edward Anaya. The team, led by coach, Sid Luckenbach, came in 2nd place in the Division I Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition on February 26.  This earns them a spot in the OM State Competition coming up March 26 in Brentwood.

Odyssey teams are judged on a long-term problem and a spontaneous problem. At the beginning of the school year the team chooses one of the five given problems.  They must solve that problem in an 8 minute entertaining skit. The skit, props, backdrop, and costumes are all made by the team members without outside assistance.

Team Del Rey's problem: As Good as Gold...berg had the team present an uncomplicated existing item that is used in a simple and effective way to complete a real life task. The team also created their own solution, a Rube Goldberg type device (similar to the game Mouse Trap) made out of an unnecessarily complex series of components that performed the same task as the existing item. The performance included an inventor character and a marketing plan/sales pitch for its creation.

The boys took 1st place on their long-term problem and 2nd place overall.  Lamorinda Patch wishes the guys the best of luck at the State Competition and gives all the Lamorinda Regional OM winners a well-deserved thumbs up!
