University of California at Berkeley football player Ted Agu died today at the age of 21, according to the university's athletic department.

Athletic department spokesman Herb Benenson said he could not disclose the details of Agu's death as of this morning but might be able to release more information later today.

Agu, a defensive lineman, was a public health major and would have been a senior in the fall, according to the university's website. He was from Bakersfield and graduated from Frontier High School there.

Athletic department officials said in a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Ted's family and friends, our players and coaches, and our university family. Our student-athletes are our priority and we are providing counseling services for our players."

Cal football coach Sonny Dykes said, "This is a very difficult time for our football family. Ted was a remarkable young man and a member of this family who was highly respected and loved by his teammates and coaching staff. He had an incredible passion for life and will be deeply missed."

Athletics department director Sandy Barbour said, "Our heartfelt condolences go out to Ted's family. This is a very painful time for the entire Cal family."

Barbour said, "In the days and weeks ahead, my focus will be on providing every member of our community the support and information they need to get through this time. We will get through this together."
