Boys NCS Finals: Bishop O'Dowd Knocks Off Campolindo

Longrus scores eight points and grabs 18 rebounds.

Unfortunately for Campolindo High they were unable to slay Goliath, as Bishop O’Dowd High’s monstrous frontcourt of Richard Longrus Jr. and T.J. Daniel dominated the North Coast Section Division III finals at St. Mary’s college Saturday.

Longrus, a 6-foot-7, 210 pound, power forward snatched 18 rebounds and locked down the paint with four blocks leading the Dragons to a 56-43 victory over the Cougars.

“For not being a very big team, we played (O’Dowd) pretty tough,” said Campo coach matt Watson. “They had a lot of offensive rebounds. I would say that was the difference in the game, their ability to rebound the ball. Our guys fought hard and I am very proud of them.”

The Cougar faithful filled McKeon Pavilion and their energy and exuberance spurred Campolindo on a 5-0 run to start the game.

O’Dowd, however, would settle in and pull ahead by three at the end of the first period.

In the second, O’Dowd turned up the heat defensively and only allowed five points, while going on their own 8-0 scoring run midway through the quarter. The Dragons claimed a 10-point advantage heading into the locker room.

In the third period, the plucky Cougars pulled to within six on a Issac Christian three.  But O’Dowd rebuffed their comeback attempt, punctuated by a Lonrus block at closeout.

The Dragons led by 10 at the end of three and Campo was never able to get any closer than eight in the final period.

“The guys never gave up. They have a ton of no-quit in them,” said Watson. “I am very proud of what they have accomplished this year. Obviously this is not what we wanted. But we got here, and that was the goal at the beginning of the season.”

Daniel led all scorers with 13 points, showing smooth post moves. Jack Evans led the Cougars with nine points.

Campolindo came up just short of collecting their sixth section title of the year. The school has claimed NCS championships in Football, team boys/girls cross country, and individual boys/ girls cross country.
