Another Teen Night Coming to New Rheem Theater

The power of Facebook has already hooked up about 300 Geeks and Nerds ready for a pre-school dance night at the Rheem on Aug. 28.

The Rheem Theater's Electric Tiara is bumping to a new beat these days as management turns the 50s-era venue over to a couple of local DJs and hundreds of kids who flock to the neglected Rheem Center to dance and... well, to dance.

Organizer Beau Behan says so far they've sold 300 tickets for a planned event Aug. 28, with word of the upcoming dance night spreading via Facebook and other social media.

"We are not publicizing the Teen Dance on our site since teen-agers do not really go to our web site based on a survey that we did," Behan said Saturday.  "They go to our Facebook site and the DJ's site."

Organizers say they were pleased by the turnout and "no drama" atmosphere of earlier events and Behan says the dances may have found a permanent place at the Rheem.

"It is no longer a matter of being profitable when it comes to these type of events for the teens or youth, it is a matter of ensuring that the New Rheem Theatre could secure a place in the hearts of the future generation, and thus, the expectancy for its sustenance and longevity," he says.  "What I have envisioned is that if more teens and youth from all over the Bay Area know about the New Rheem theatre, then the better it will be, since they can talk about the theatre to their friends and families — thus the propagation of news and stories about our theatre is working at its best degree."

Quite a statement.

The rules for the upcoming "Back to School - Clubbers' Orientation" night are the same as the most recent "Blast From The Past"  - no alcohol or drugs and no gangster attire. The theme, if you're going, is "Geeks and Nerds."

The dance runs from 7 p.m. to midnight.
