Already Leafy, Lafayette School District Gets Even Greener

Schools in Lafayette are already going solar, but a new district initiative is encouraging them to go even further.

Building on the installation and activation of solar panels at all school sites during the past year, the Lafayette School District recently introduced a new Green School Operations Policy.  The intent of the policy is: "to promote green school practices that conserve natural resources, reduce the impact of the district operations on the environment, protect the health of students, staff and community and realize cost savings for the district."

Among the many goals established by the new policy, the District seeks to conserve energy and water and adhere to "green" building standards.  The District also hopes to reduce traffic in Lafayette by continuing to encourage students to walk or bike to school or use public transportation.  To date, the District has been fairly successful due to campaigns such as "Walk or Bike to School on Wednesday."

Although district officials encourage students to bike to school, they are adamant that the law be followed and helmets be worn.  Springhill Principal Bruce Wodhams recently reminded students and parent of this rule.

"All children riding bikes to school are required to wear bicycle helmets to and from school," said Wodhams. "No exceptions.  This is a State law as well as a Springhill policy.  Those not following this rule will lose the privilege of riding a bike to school."

Sounds reasonable to us.
