Lafayette Council Will Not "Go Charter"

Lamorinda Patch has felt the heat of opposition to a proposal bringing a city charter to Lafayette, and so did the City Council Monday night.

The Lafayette City Council voted Monday to shelve a proposal adopting charter city status for Lafayette - a move many felt would be a precursor to passage of a property transfer tax and other levies the city would use to shore up sagging infrastructure.

Such a tax would have earmarked a small portion of the sale price of each piece of property sold in Lafayette and make it available to the city - but speakers at Monday's council meeting lined up to voice their opposition and the city took note.

The idea has been scrapped in light of opposition the city noted would have made it impossible to enact.
