Parking Spaces Along Moraga Road In Lafayette May Be Going Away

A revamping of the adjacent plaza may allow the city to get rid of the four parking spaces drivers love to hate

Lafayette  City Manager Steven Falk says they've been getting complaints about them for 15 years.

Drivers are not hesitant to say they hate the four parking spaces on the eastern side of Moraga Road just before that thoroughfare hits Mt. Diablo Boulevard in downtown Lafayette.

The problem they create is northbound drivers on Moraga Road who want to turn right on Mt. Diablo Boulevard have to manuever around those spaces before they can get into the right turn lane.

Now, Falk says those unpopular parking spaces may be going away in a year or so.

A revamping of the adjacent Lafayette Plaza may allow the city to move those spaces off the street and back into the plaza parking lot.

The spaces were installed 15 years ago when the city wanted to make Plaza Way a one-way street.

The change required the owners of The Squirrel's Coffee Shop to give up four parking spaces. The coffee shop owners also own the three other buildings in the plaza.

To make up for the loss of parking, the city created the four on-street spaces in front of the coffee shop.

However, the coffee shop closed in August and now the city may get involved in a remake of the plaza.

If they do, they return the four spaces back to the parking lot and take them off the street.

And that will certainly make many Moraga Road drivers happy.
