Orinda Council Prepares for Trail Review

Tuesday meeting will focus on 82-page Bicycle, Trail and Walkway Master Plan.

On foot and on wheels, in strollers (and strollers pushing strollers), Orindans are using the city's trails and bike lanes.

This use will get some scrutiny at the Orinda City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Orinda Library Auditorium. The council is due to review an 82-page draft of the Bicycle, Trail and Walkway (BTW) Master Plan.

The draft includes a look at public input from meetings on Oct. 15, 2008, and July 15, 2009, as well as results of a survey in which more than 500 residents participated from May 2008 to February 2009.

There also is a statistical study of use by pedestrians and cyclists of trails and bicycle lanes on weekdays and weekends at Camino Pablo and Brookwood Road, Moraga Way and Glorietta Boulevard, and St. Stephen’s Trail and Bryant Way.

The draft looks closely at city encouragement and education efforts for hikers, bikers and cyclists.

A review of opportunities for new trails, and pedestrian and bike trail options includes constraints that might curb plans. See Table 2-4 in the report.

Among potential projects mentioned are:

  • connecting downtown to the regional trail network via the de Laveaga Trail;
  •  bike and pedestrian connections along the Highway 24 corridor from Moraga Way to the Wilder development.

These are not definite projects but listed as a resource for staff when pursuing grants for improvements.

Also on the council agenda Tuesday night is a review of finances midway through the fiscal year.
