New Mayor and Vice Mayor for Moraga; Rancho Laguna "Spacial Separation" Dog Park Design Approved - Letters Fly

With all the local gridiron heroics going on Dec. 14th's Moraga Town Council meeting nearly went unnoticed. We're kidding, of course, the letters started to come in almost immediately afterward.

Councilmember Michael Metcalf takes the gavel as Mayor of Moraga after Karen Mendonca ended her term. Howard Harpham was named vice mayor.

The standard transfer of responsibility took place at the council's Dec. 14 meeting and raised at least one set of eyebrows (see accompanying Letter to the Editor). Councilmembers also voted 3-2 to accept a Park and Recreation Commission recommendation for a dedicated, "spatially separated" dog run bounding an existing walking path along the northern and eastern flanks of the park.

The council is expected to approve a construction contract to build a dedicated off-leash run inside the park, a proposal which polarized dog owners, neighbors and park users.

Town officials have indicated that much of the project and other park improvements will be underwritten by the East Bay Regional Park District and Measure WW grant funds -- and not the town's General Fund.
