New Budget Will Be Discussed By Moraga Town Council At Wednesday Meeting

The Moraga Town Council will discuss its 2013-2014 budget and its extra $1 million in sales tax revenue on Wednesday evening.

The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Joaquin-Moraga Intermediate School auditorium, 1010 Camino Pablo.

The council will discuss its five-year spending plan. A big part of that discussion will be the budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The 2013-2014 budget is officially $7.9 million. However, that includes $1 million projected to be collected this next year thanks to the one-cent sales tax increase approved by Moraga voters last November under Measure K. Those funds have been dedicated to road repairs and maintenance.

With the extra sales tax revenue, the budget is closer to $6.9 million. The city is projected to bring in $8,000 more in revenue than it spends.

The current 2012-2013 budget is about $6.6 million. It has a projected surplus of $98,000. The city will end the year with about $3 million in reserves.

In a report to the council, City Manager Jill Keimach said Moraga is financially better off than most cities now because over the years elected leaders and city officials have committed to a "minimal government" and lived within their means.

She also credits the city's decision in 2008 to pay off its unfunded pension liability. She added the town's five employee groups have worked with the city to keep costs down.

At Wednesday's meeting, the council is also scheduled to discuss compensation packages involving those employee groups.
