Moraga Street Repairs Begin Monday

Thanks to money from a one percent sales tax, the streets of Moraga will get repaved over the next three years.

Bad roads are generally in the top three complaints of residents in any town. Thanks to money residents raised from a one percent sales tax Moraga voters approved last year, a town-wide street repair project gets underway on Monday (Aug. 5).

100 streets equaling about 14 miles will be resurfaced this month. Though the work will not be top-notch asphalt, which is the costliest method, it will be a chip seal covered with a microsurface, which is less expensive and has a life span of nearly 10 years.

This approach is less likely to rouse the ire of residents, unlike the resurfacing of some Lafayette streets, which is chip seal only. Residents there have failed to pass three different ballot measures that would have raised taxes for road repairs.

Letters will go out to residents a week before the work is slated to begin on their streets.

This year's work is phase one of a three-phase project. This year roads in relatively good condition will get new surfaces. Next year, roads with some deterioration will get attention, and in 2015, the worst roads will be resurfaced.

To follow the project, residents can "like" the city's Facebook page.
