Lafayette Forms Task Force To Study Old Library Site

The committee will try to determine the best use for the site on Moraga Road as well as an abandoned property across the street

The Lafayette City Council approved the formation of a task force to study the old library building as well as a property across the street at its meeting Tuesday night.

The task force will recommend a "best use" for the former library site at 952 Moraga Road as well as four parcels across the street.

In a report to the council, City Manager Steven Falk said that under a 1994 agreement, the city is required to purchase the former library site at some point.

The current city budget has allocated $4 million for acquisition and renovation of the property.

The former library sits next to Lafayette School, but the school district has determined the building is not usable for them.

Falk said there has been discussion in the past about renovating the facility and using it for city offices. Past studies have indicated this plan could save the city significant money in the future.

In 2010, the city also used parking fund money to purchase four parcels across the street at 949 Moraga Road. One of those parcels contains a now-vacant doctors office.

The city is trying to decide whether to renovate the building or tear it down and build something new.
