Lafayette Council to Hear Plastic Bag Ban Proposal

The town's environmental task force is recommending rules similar to those in San Francisco, Alameda County.

Next month, Lafayette's environmental task force will propose a version of the plastic bag bans that have been adopted in several California jurisdictions, including Alameda County.

The Lafayette proposal would make an exemption for plastic bags used to wrap meat, produce, or items in the bulk food section of some groceries, according to the Contra Costa Times.

When the idea of a Contra Costa County plastic bag ban was theoretically broached earlier in the year, Patch readers had a range of opinions. A completely unscientific poll found a slight edge for those favoring a ban.

Still, many commenters expressed some version of this: "Oh dear, more San Francisco Moonbeam Wackiness. How about crime, efficiency of government, and the local economy? Plastic bags? Pffftt"
