Lafayette Council Honors Homegrown Science Duo; Ponders Its Role In the Bay Area

It will be, as City Manager Steven Falk says, a "big meeting" in Lafayette on Monday night as the City Council addresses a number of issues and takes time to pay tribute to two local students.

The Lafayette City Council will consider a number of important issues at its meeting Monday night, tackling budgets and road repair issues and no less a question than Lafayette's place in the Bay Area's housing picture.

And then there's the little something of official recognition for two high-school kids who set the science world on its ear last week. and the council are expected to hand proclamations honoring the achievements of Acalanes students at 7 p.m. Monday.

From 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., City Manager Steven Falk predicted, the council will review the draft budget for the coming fiscal year and consider whether to address the $15.5 million road repair backlog or to eliminate the street pole banner and holiday lights programs to save money.

And "sometime after 7:30 p.m.," Falk said the council is expected to have a "robust discussion about Lafayette’s place in the Bay Area, what role it should play in providing market-rate and affordable housing, what obligation do we have because we have a BART station, and how the city should position itself vis a vis the regional planning agencies."

And that, folks, is one action-packed agenda.
