Lafayette Continues Planning for Bicycles and Walkers

The City is inviting interested residents along for a tour of a proposed new network of bike and pedestrian paths.

The City of Lafayette invites interested community members to join a public site tour they're holding to discuss the preferred design for a bicycle and pedestrian pathway along the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Aqueduct right-of-way. The tour will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The pathway under study would follow the EBMUD Aqueduct through Downtown Lafayette from Risa Road to Brown Avenue, south of State Route 24 and north of Mt. Diablo Boulevard. The Feasibility and Options Study will determine whether the City should pursue a pathway along all or part of this corridor. If constructed, the pathway would provide connections for bicyclists and pedestrians to BART, businesses and residences in Downtown Lafayette, and to trails in Briones Regional Park.

The guided tour will consist of five site stops, beginning at Risa Road north of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and finishing at Brown Avenue. The tour group will be at Risa Road from 9:00 a.m to 9:30 a.m, at Happy Valley Road from 9:45 a.m to 10:15 a.m, at Oak Hill Road from 10:30 a.m to 11:00 a.m, at First Street from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m, and at Brown Avenue from noon until 12:30 p.m. You may join for all or part of the tour.

At each tour stop, City staff and consultants will present maps and photo-simulations showing the draft preferred pathway design options for each location, answer questions, and solicit community input and ideas.  This site tour is an opportunity to promote information sharing and dialogue between interested stakeholders, potential pathway users, the general public, and the City.  Lafayette will provide a passenger van to shuttle attendees. The van will be available to transport attendees at each rendezvous point and will return to Risa Road at the end of the tour.

A team led by Alta Planning + Design of Berkeley, California is conducting the Feasibility Study. Funding for the feasibility study is provided by a Caltrans Community Based Planning Grant.
