Lafayette City Council Expected to Green Light MOFD Land Purchase Monday

The land would be used to eventually construct a jointly operated fire station to serve both Lafayette and Orinda.

The Lafayette City Council on Monday is expected to approve a routine item in which the city would approve of the Moraga Orinda Fire District spending $1.3 million on a Lafayette parcel upon which officials hope to someday build a new fire station.

Because the property on Lorinda Lane is outside of MOFD's boundaries, the fire district cannot purchase the land. So it's giving Lafayette the money to buy the land before someone else does.

City officials and members of the MOFD board would like to see the property become the site of "Station 46," which would serve western Lafayette and eastern Orinda. The Contra Costa board of supervisors last week agreed to pursue a partnership between Consolidated Fire District, which serves Lafayette, and MOFD, to jointly run the station. Both districts are facing financial trouble and Con Fire has closed several stations, including its only station in Clayton.

Lafayette officials told the Contra Costa Times that they do not expect the land purchase item to be controversial, since the idea of a new station has a lot of support in the city.

The council meets Monday at 7 p.m. at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd.
