Wight House Wrong for the Ridgeline?

Lafayette City Council moves toward approval of phase 1 of Wight house on Monday, with some conditions.

Lafayette residents Steve and Linda Wight are moving forward with their plan for a house on the hill after phase 1 of the Wight house was discussed by city council Monday night.

The Lafayette City Council met Monday to continue the appeal hearing of the Wight house, after the Planning Commission .

The Wight's architectural team came back with changes to the plan that were suggested at the , including a shift of the house, a change to make the roof flat and the addition of trees to block the home from view.

Neighbors who attended the meeting expressed their concerns about the ridgeline views and the construction plan.

Tom Steuber, a neighbor living on Monticello Rd., said he was extremely concerned about the impact of the Wight project on the neighborhood, specifically the staging and vehicle access to the project area.

Other members of the public and neighbors of the project expressed the same concerns, as well as the issue of visibility and construction scarring of the hillside.

David Bowie, the representative for the Wight family, emphasized the fact that a Phase 1 approval was merely supposed to address the site and massing of the project, which he said had both been dealt with.

PATCH CLARIFICATION: Ultimately, the city council decided to agree to approve phase 1 of the project, with some additional conditions. These conditions will be changed via a resolution that will be seen by the city council on September 24.

Council members decided to allow for the phase 1 application to expire if phase 2 did not pass, and also retained the right for final approval. The project will be seen again by city council on September 24, and phase 2 of the project will then come back to the city council for final approval after the Design Review Commission sees it.

According to the minutes from the City of Lafayette, the Council did not approve Phase I, but rather continued the matter to the September 24 meeting.

Toms-
You're right, they haven't officially approved phase 1 yet, and I've clarified the article to reflect that. City council agreed to approve the project, pending conditions of the project which will be officially changed come September. Hope that makes it more clear.

On several occasions, I have seen 5-6 chickens pecking their way down their steep driveway on theRead More east side of Saint Mary's Road, very close to the Cattle Chute. I had not read this story earlier. On 6/3 or 6/4, I saw a black hen, alone, out in the road right at the point of the Moraga Commons. It was pecking the pavement on Moraga Road, as cars turning north from Saint Mary's Road were avoiding it. I hope the chicken crossed the road to the trail on the other side. Better yet, I hope it turned around and followed that trail right back to the Cattle Chute and home.
