Nonprofit organizations across the country lost their tax-exempt status for failing to file necessary forms with the IRS.
More than 70 registered Lamorinda nonprofits lost their tax-exempt status last week, but many may have succumbed to hard financial times long before the tax man ticked them off his list.
Last week, the New York Times reported that the Internal Revenue Service stripped some 275,000 nonprofits of tax-exempt status after they failed to file informational tax forms for the third year in a row. The list included about dozens of organizations in Lamorinda.
Nationwide, the IRS’ action trimmed the nonprofit sector by 17 percent, but the taxman told the Times that most of the organizations were likely no longer in operation.
The Times article noted that the culling followed two decades of growth in the nonprofit sector. In 1991, there were 516,000 religious and charitable organizations. Last year, The Chronicle of Philanthropy counted 1.2 million.
According to the Urban Institute, these charities, foundations, and other nonprofit organizations account for 9 percent of the nation’s wages and salaries. If you’re curious about a particular nonprofit, the Urban Institute’s National Center for Charitable Statistics is one of the handiest resources for finding financial and other information about these organizations.

"Society of Preservation of Barbershop Quartets" obviously failed in their mission. "Social Remotivations, Inc." needs to get re-motivated to file their tax returns.
