A portion of Mt. Diablo Boulevard’s eastern sector is about to get a major facelift.
The Lafayette City Council on Monday night approved a $1.4 million streetscape improvement project for Mt. Diablo Boulevard between First Street and Brown Avenue.
The revamp of the road will include adding median islands, street lights, landscaping and decorative crosswalks.
The city engineer’s original estimate for the project was $1,020,000. The three lowest bids were within $10,000 of each other and all were 15 percent over the initial estimate.
The council awarded the contract to the lowest bidder Gordon N. Ball Inc., which filed a bid of $1,164,635.
The cost of the project is now listed at $1,497,935. The extra $300,000 is for additional costs to the city such as purchasing street lights.
The funding for the work comes from several sources, including Measure J TLC Grant money, streetlight replacement reserve funds and walkways development fees.
