Election Profile: Brandt Andersson - Lafayette City Council Candidate

Watch this space for a series of introductory profiles of local candidates running for office in Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda. Lamorinda Patch will be providing more in-depth interviews with the candidates as the election progresses.

Brandt Andersson is an estate planning and probate attorney. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Andersson went on to work for 13 years as a researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, studying building energy efficiency. At age 40, he went back to school and earned a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He shares a practice with his wife Patricia, called Andersson and Andersson. Elected to the City Council in 2002, he was chosen as the mayor of Lafayette in December 2009 and currently serves in that role.

LamorindaPatch: Do you have a particular platform or issue of interest this election year?

"By necessity, finances must be the focus for the city council this election year.  Because of my career experience I have specialized in land use issues in the past, but the best allocation of our financial resources must be the focus of the city council in 2010. During my tenure as mayor, I believe I've helped the city find ways to contain costs, build up a healthy reserve and preserve open space."

LamorindaPatch: What are your plans for Lafayette if elected?

"I plan to continue finding ways to chip away at the backlog of road issues in our city.  The recession has made it difficult for the city council to find money during these tough times, and I don't think the council should take on any big new initiatives.  Instead, I would like to continue developing a long-view plan for downtown development, open space preservation and budgeting."

Patch "Fun Fact:" Fellow Lafayette City Council member Don Tatzin also attended MIT during the same time period as Andersson, though neither dreamed they'd end up serving on the Lafayette City Council together.
